This Student CenterNick-named "The Lodge," is designed to provide large informal community gatherings and multi-function space for 250 Endicott students, including a large, commercial kitchen. The grand, central hall has a double volume space framed with handmade timber scissor trusses and exposed wood decking. A central hearth provides warmth and a central focus. A large, open floor plan with a mezzanine, full tel/data/video service, accomodates many uses. |

Design Concept + DeliveryThe Design Concept for the student center evokes a warm, rustic feeling inspired by the main halls of Austria’s alpine lodges. The grand, hall serves large groups. A central hearth provides warmth and focus. The mezzanine creates smaller and more intimate areas. The western façade frames an exposed rock outcropping, with an orthogonal pattern of windows that bring the experience of the natural rock face into the lodge. The eastern façade articulates a pattern of the sun setting on the horizon. The window patterns expose the timber frame to create the impression of interior space expanding to the exterior. The Lodge was designed and built in six months. N+A Architects coordinated CD's in staggered-release packagesfor fast-track construction. N+A Architects worked with Endicott to coordinate Civil and M/E engineering, commercial kitchen design and multiple, prime contractors. |
